Sodium Bicarbonate Health Topic

Sodium bicarbonate (also known as "baking soda" or "bicarbonate of soda") is an antacid that neutralizes stomach acid, and is used to relieve heartburn and indigestion.4 It is an alkali substance that increases the pH of the blood.5 An overdose of sodium bicarbonate can cause severe alkalosis.1 Sodium bicarbonate has been noted for its fungicidal properties in plants.3 Lasting fungicidal activity against plant diseases can be obtained by using sodium bicarbonate in combination with a surfactant.8

01.
Sodium Bicarbonate Chemistry and Compatibility
Sodium bicarbonate therapy (particularly high-dose parenteral use) can lead to severe metabolic alkalosis, hypokalemia, hypocalcemia, overshoot alkalosis, hypernatremia, volume overload, congestive heart failure, shifts in the oxygen dissociation curve causing decreased tissue oxygenation, and paradoxical central nervous system acidosis leading to respiratory arrest. Oral sodium bicarbonate can either increase or reduce the rate and/or extent of absorption of many orally administered drugs.

Simoncini Sodium Bicarbonate and Cancer Theory
"At the moment, against fungi there is no useful remedy other than, in my opinion, sodium bicarbonate."

03.
Baking Soda as a Plant Fungicide
There has been considerable interest in the use of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate, NaHCO3) and potassium bicarbonate (KHCO3) to control powdery mildew and other fungal diseases of plants.

04.
Sodium Bicarbonate Medical Facts on Drugs.com
Sodium bicarbonate is an antacid that neutralizes stomach acid. It is used to relieve heartburn and indigestion. It is also used to make the blood and urine less acidic in certain conditions.

05.
A Spoonful of Baking Soda Does Speed You Up, Say Scientists
Sodium bicarbonate is an alkali substance that increases the pH of the blood. This seems to reduce and offset the acidity produced in the muscles during intense, anaerobic exercise that produces lactic acid most quickly, such as fast running or swimming.

06.
Sodium Bicarbonate Infusion Found to Reduce Risk of Contrast-Induced Nephropathy
Data analysis revealed that patients receiving sodium bicarbonate achieved urine pH's of 6.5 as opposed to 5.6 with those receiving sodium chloride. This alkalinization is theorized to have a protective effect against the formation of free-radicals that may cause nephropathy.

07.
Sodium Bicarbonate No Protection Against Contrast Nephropathy
Using sodium bicarbonate does not prevent contrast medium-induced nephropathy in patients with moderate to severe renal dysfunction, a new randomized study has found.

Agricultural and Horticultural Fungicide and Fruit Storage Disease Preventing Agent
It was found that sodium bicarbonate has a fungicidal activity and at the same time that the compound has a defect as a fungicide in that it is inferior in adhesiveness and spreadability and for this reason cannot be used alone as a fungicide. It is further found that an agricultural and horticultural fungicide having lasting fungicidal activity against plant diseases in a control value of over 90% can be obtained by using sodium bicarbonate in combination with a surfactant, particularly a food emulsifier, and further that the combination shows extensive effect in preventing fruit storage diseases.

Sodium Bicarbonate is an Alkaline Salt
Alkaline salts as a means of reducing acidity in the muscle cell and improving anaerobic exercise have had remarkable research interest in the last 15 years. The substance which neutralises an acid is known as a base. Your body produces bases that help to neutralise or buffer acids. These buffers that neutralise acids are often called alkaline.

Baking Soda for Colds and Flu
In the booklet Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Medical Uses, published in 1924: In 1918 and 1919 while fighting the flu with the U. S. Public Health Service it was brought to my attention that rarely anyone who had been thoroughly alkalinized with bicarbonate of soda contracted the disease, and those who did contract it, if alkalinized early, would invariably have mild attacks. I have since that time treated all cases of cold, influenza...by first giving generous doses of bicarbonate of soda, and...within 36 hours the symptoms would have entirely abated. Further,...I have advocated the use of bicarbonate of soda as a preventive for colds, with the result that...those who took soda were not affected, while nearly everyone around them had the flu".
