Candida is also known as candidiasis (candida overgrowth). The yeast Candida albicans normally lives harmlessly in small amounts on the skin and in the mucous membranes, controlled by beneficial bacteria in the body and the immune system. If the beneficial bacteria are killed by broad-spectrum antibiotics, or if a person's immune system becomes weakened, Candida can grow unchecked and cause symptoms, including headaches, fatigue, muscle aches, fungal infections such as thrush, and leaky gut syndrome.*
