    Chlorophyll, the pigment that gives plants their green color, is part of the process plants use to produce energy through photosynthesis. Chlorophyll has long been used in traditional medicine as in internal deodorant, and topically as a wound healer. 

    The molecular structure of chlorophyll is almost identical to that of hemin in hemoglobin, a protein in blood that transports oxygen throughout the body. The only difference in the structures of hemin and chlorophyll is the central atom: in hemin it is iron, while in chlorophyll it is magnesium. Because of the similarities between chlorophyll and hemin, chlorophyll is able to assimilate into the body where it can aid in rebuilding blood cells. Chlorophyll has been observed to increase the speed of hemoglobin regeneration.

    As a supplement, chlorophyll is available in the form of chlorophyllin, which is water-soluble and shelf-stable. Chlorophyllin is derived from chlorophyll, but the magnesium atom at the center is replaced with copper. Because it is water-soluble, chlorophyllin is readily bio-available and easily absorbed, unlike natural chlorophyll (derived from dark, leafy greens and wheatgrass juices) which is not water-soluble.

    Chlorophyll and chlorophyllin have potent anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic, and anti-mutagenic effects. In one in vitro study, chlorophyllin reduced DNA damage from ionizing radiation by 90%. In another study on mice with aplastic anemia, chlorophyllin, was found to promote the proliferation and differentiation of stem cell function and increased peripheral blood white cell and platelet counts, thereby improving immuno-regulatory capacity.

Chlorophyllin is a semi-synthetic mixture derived from chlorophyll. During the synthesis of chlorophyllin, the magnesium atom at the center of the ring is replaced with copper and the phytol tail is lost. Unlike natural chlorophyll, chlorophyllin is water-soluble. Chlorophyllin has been used orally as an internal deodorant and topically in the treatment of slow-healing wounds for more than 50 years without any serious side effects.
