Strontium: Breakthrough Against Osteoporosis |
|
Mention strontium to most people, and they will almost always immediately think of strontium-90, a highly dangerous, radioactive component. However, stable strontium (nonradioactive) is nontoxic, even when administered in large doses for prolonged periods. Strontium has been safely used as a medicinal substance for more than a hundred years. It also appears to be one of the most effective substances yet found for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis and other bone-related conditions. Repeatedly administering stable strontium can even gradually eliminate radioactive strontium from the body. The stable form slowly replaces the radioactive form in bone, and radioactive strontium is excreted in the urine. Because of its chemical similarity to calcium, strontium can replace calcium to some extent in various biochemical processes in the body. In a study on metastatic bone cancer, X-rays taken before and after strontium therapy demonstrated new mineral deposits in areas of bone that had been eroded by the cancer. Strontium also has been shown to reduce the incidence of cavities.

Strontium for Bone Health |
|
Minerals and trace elements affect bone formation and resorption through direct or indirect effects on bone cells. Strontium has pharmacological effects on bone when present at levels higher than those required for normal cell physiology. In addition to its antiresorptive activity, strontium was found to have anabolic activity in bone, and thus may have significant beneficial effects on bone balance. Strontium is very closely related to calcium and they both utilize the same carrier protein for transport.

New Research Shows Strontium Supplements Build Bone |
|
Strontium has both anabolic (bone building) effects and anti-resorption (anti-depleting) effects. Calcium should not be taken simultaneously with the strontium since the calcium dramatically decreases the absorption of the strontium. Strontium should not be used in children since it can alter the architecture of rapidly growing bones. |

Supplementing larger amounts of strontium increases calcium, but not magnesium retention, and it has the potential to lower stomach acid levels, insulin, WBC, germanium, fluoride, bismuth, and silicon. Strontium in Prostate Cancer |
|
Strontium imitates the in-vivo behaviour of calcium and is preferentially taken up by bone, concentrating at sites of high skeletal metabolic activity. Due to the high affinity of osteoblastic skeletal metastases for this isotope, strontium is retained almost indefinitely within metastatic bone. Up to 80% of patients receiving radioactive Strontium 89 will achieve a response with significant reduction in metastatic skeletal pain, with about 20% of these becoming pain free. Strontium not only is effective in treating painful metastases but also has a therapeutic effect on metastases that have not yet become painful. Strontium 89 has no significant effect on patient survival, but reduces the frequency and potency of analgesia required while bringing significant pain alleviation and the potential for improved physical activity, and thus substantial improvements in overall quality of life.
