Calcium performs numerous vital functions in the body. Calcium is needed for muscle contraction, blood vessel contraction and expansion, the secretion of hormones and enzymes, and sending messages through the nervous system.1 But is doesn't work alone. Calcium works with Phosphorus to build strong bones and teeth.5 Calcium needs Magnesium to regulate absorption and muscle function.4 Calcium needs Vitamin D to help improve absorption.1 Excessive intake of protein, sodium, phosphates (from carbonated beverages), alcohol or caffeine can lead to diminished calcium levels in the body.3
