ABOUT MILK & DAIRY PRODUCTS

Milk’s main selling point is calcium, and milk-drinking is touted for building strong bones. However, clinical research shows that dairy products have little or no benefit for bones.2 Ingestion of natural estrogens from cows in milk may be linked to breast, prostate, and testicular cancers in humans.1 In addition, synthetic hormones such as recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) are commonly used in dairy cows to increase the production of milk.2 Milk from rBGH-treated cows has much higher levels of IGF-1, a hormone considered to be a high risk factor for breast, prostate, colon, lung, and other cancers.3 Many people who are advocates of raw milk believe that raw milk’s benefits far outweigh that of commercially pasteurized milk.4 Pasteurizing milk completely changes the structure of the milk proteins, denaturing it into something far less than healthy. It destroys the milk’s beneficial bacteria along with many of its nutritious components.4

Milk and Dairy Nutrition Information

  1. Does Milk Cause Cancer?

Ingestion of natural estrogens from cows (particularly from pregnant cows) in milk may be linked to breast, prostate, and testicular cancers in humans. All are "hormone-dependent" tumors, meaning that they need sex hormones to grow.

  2. Health Concerns About Dairy Products

Milk's main selling point is calcium, and milk-drinking is touted for building strong bones in children and preventing osteoporosis in older persons. However, clinical research shows that dairy products have little or no benefit for bones. In studies of children and adults, exercise has been found to have a major effect on bone density. Prostate and breast cancers have been linked to consumption of dairy products, presumably related to increases in a compound called insulin-like growth factor (IGF-I). Milk contains contaminants that range from pesticides to drugs. Milk naturally contains hormones and growth factors produced within a cow's body. In addition, synthetic hormones such as recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH) are commonly used in dairy cows to increase the production of milk.

  3. Your Milk on Drugs: The Dangers of rBGH in Dairy Products

Although banned in most other industrialized nations due to the health risks to humans and harm to the animals, Monsanto's genetically engineered bovine growth hormone (rBGH or rBST) is still injected into dairy cows in the US to increase milk-production. Milk from rBGH-treated cows has much higher levels of IGF-1, a hormone considered to be a high risk factor for breast, prostate, colon, lung, and other cancers. IGF-1 levels in milk from treated cows with rBGH can be up to 10 times higher.

  4. Raw versus Pasturized Milk

Many people who are advocates of raw milk believe that raw milk's benefits far outweigh that of commercially pasteurized milk. The misinformation on the raw milk issue can be compared with the whole "saturated fats cause heart disease and high cholesterol" issue. Raw milk is an excellent source of nutrients including beneficial bacteria such as lactobacillus acidophilus and various vitamins, minerals, fats, carbohydrates, proteins and enzymes. Pasteurizing milk completely changes the structure of the milk proteins, denaturing it into something far less than healthy. It destroys the milk's beneficial bacteria along with many of its nutritious components. The irony of pasteurization is that it actually destroys the germicidal properties of milk.

  5. The NOTmilk Website

NOTMILK's goals are to help you find the whole truth about cow's milk and dairy quickly ... and to provide quality online resources.

  6. Milk Letter: A Message to My Patients

Of all the mammals, only humans continue to drink milk beyond babyhood. The milk of every species of mammal is unique and specifically tailored to the requirements of that animal. Not only is cow's milk not meant for human nutrition, it is also plagued by the practices of the modern dairy industry, which have introduced bovine growth hormones, antibiotics and other toxins into the milk supply. I am convinced on the weight of the scientific evidence that it does not "do a body good." Inclusion of milk will only reduce your diet's nutritional value and safety.

  7. Milk Products, Breast Cancer, and China

Only one in 10,000 women in China will die from it, compared to one in 10 across most Western countries. It made perfect sense to me that whatever was causing my breast cancer and the shockingly high incidence in this country generally, it was almost certainly something to do with our better-off, middle-class, Western lifestyle. I now believe that the link between dairy produce and breast cancer is similar to the link between smoking and lung cancer.

  8. Ovarian Cancer Risk and Consumption of Milk Products and Lactose

An analysis of 21 studies that have investigated the link between ovarian cancer and the consumption of milk products and lactose has found some support for the hypothesis that high intake is associated with increased cancer risk.

  9. NOTMilk: A to Z

A collection of quotes and articles concerning the link between milk and various ailments.

  10. PETA's MilkSucks Website

Information on illnesses associated with modern dairy products. Also the state of the modern dairy industry.

  11. Study Finds Prion Proteins in Milk

A study has identified the presence of normal prion proteins in milk from humans, cows, sheep, and goats.

  12. Perchlorate Found In Dairy and Breast Milk Samples from Across the Country

This thyroid-disrupting chemical may be more widespread than previously believed. Perchlorate occurs naturally and is also a primary ingredient in solid rocket fuel. The chemical can interfere with iodide uptake in the thyroid gland, disrupting adult metabolism and childhood development.

  13. Melamine in Formula Milk

Overview of the Chinese melamine health scandal.

  14. False Advertising Complaints Against the "Milk Mustache" Ad Campaign Validated

There are no data to support the belief that milk per se benefits sports performance. A recent ... analysis found that the majority of studies designed to examine the relation of dairy food intake to bone health indicate no effect.

  15. Whey Protein / Milk Soluble Protein (Negative Perspective)

Cow milk contains two major protein fractions: casein and whey protein. Whey protein ingestion mediated larger increases in postmeal aminoacidemia.

    SCIENTIFIC STUDY

  16. Whey Protein (Positive Perspective)

From a nutritional perspective, whey proteins are hard to beat. Over 60 percent of their make-up is essential amino acids. Because the body is unable to make essential amino acids, they must be provided daily through diet.

  17. Acne: Are Milk and Sugar the Causes?

The dietary pimple producing culprits – diary and sugar (in all its blood sugar raising forms) – both cause spikes in certain pimple producing hormones. Dairy boosts male sex hormones (various forms of testosterone or androgens) and increases insulin levels just as foods that quickly raise blood sugar (sugar and starchy carbs) spike insulin.

  18. Got Milk? You Don't Need It

But what about the bucolic cow on the family farm? What about bone density and osteoporosis? What about Mom, and apple pie? Excellent NYTimes opinion column exposes the milk myth.
