A surgical tool that uses radio frequency promises less trauma and shorter recovery time for a variety of new procedures compared with traditional and laser surgery.

How It Works: With the coblation technique, radiofrequency is used to disintegrate the molecular bonds that hold tissue together. Because hot parts of the wanlike probe are encased in saline, it never touches tissue, so the target area stays cool without burn damage like with lasers.

First used by the Food And Drug Administration in 1995 and patented in 1997 by Sunnyvale, California-based ArthroCare Corporation, the technique just earned FDA approval for urologic and gynecologic applications. So far, it has been used in nearly 2 million procedures from arthroscopic surgery to tonsillectomies.

What's next: Heart care such as valve replacement, bypass and open heart surgery. "It is more precise than anyting else," says Mike Baker, the firm's president and CEO. New York dermatologist Dr. David J. Goldberg says patients heal faster and have less redness than with laser procedures.
