More About Athletic Health Blend
Athletic Health Blend is a balanced formulation of potassium, chloride, sodium, magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, vitamin C and MSM in ultra-pure activated water. No sugars, flavorings, coloring or caffeine.

Potassium
Potassium is an extremely important electrolyte that functions in the maintenance of water balance and distribution, acid-base balance, muscle and nerve cell function, heart function, kidney and adrenal function. In addtion to functioning as an electrolyte, potassium is esential for conversion of blood sugar into glycogen, the storage form of blood sugar in the muscles and liver. A potassium shortage results in lower levels of stored glycogen. Because exercising muscles use glycogen for energy, a potassium deficiency produces great fatigue and muscle weakness, the first signs of potassium deficiency.*

Chloride
Chloride helps regulate the body's fluid and electrolyte balance. Chloride is an essential mineral. The average adult human body contains about 115 grams of chloride.*

Sodium
Sodium is the principle mineral in the extra-cellular fluid of the blood. It is an essential mineral required to regulate extra-cellular fluid volume, maintain acid-base balance, and maintain the membrane potential of cells. Sodium is constantly being pumped out of cells in exchange for potassium in order to maintain the proper intracellular balance.*

Magnesium
Magnesium performs many cellular functions essential to athletic performance: muscular contraction, neuro-muscular transmission, protein and nucleic acid synthesis, membrane transports, and maintenance of electrolytic balance. The maintenance of proper magnesium status is determined by magnesium nutritional intake and magnesium loss is controlled by the kidney. Enhanced physical capacity in athletes has been reported as a benefit of oral mangesium supplementation.*

Zinc
Zinc is essential for growth and physical development, especially as it relates to proteins, fats and carbohydrates. This mineral is also vitally important to the immune system. There is increasing evidence that zince levels decline following physical stress or injury. Copper and zinc inproper balance are essential to physical performance.*

Copper
Copper is an essential element in the human body. It is found in virtually all tissues of the body, with the highest concentrations found in liver, brain , heart and kidney tissue. Copper is needed by all tissues but is highest in the liver where it contributes to energy and detoxification mechanisms. The element is also required to absorb, utilize and synthesize hemoglobin, maintain the integrity of the outer vovering of nerves, metabolize vitamin C, and for the oxidation of faty acids.*

Iron
Iron deficiency can impair work performance in adults both during short-lived exercise and during longer endurance work. Iron supplementation appears to be beneficial in reducing blood lactate concentrations following heavy exercise. Iron supplementation has rapid effects on improving exercise performance beyond the mineral's incluence on red blood cell metabolism. Iron deficiency anemia and marginal iron deficiency impair athletic performance by reducing the oxygen-carrying capacity of blood. Iron needs appear to be higher in athletes because of increased red blood cell destrrction, gastrointestinal blood loss, iron loss in sweat and decreased iron absorption.*

Vitamin C
Vitamin C plays an important role in the manufacture of collagen, the main protein substance of the human body which is vital in the formation and maintenance of connective tissue, cartilage and tendons. Specifically, vitamin C aids the joining of a portion of a molecule of the amino acid praline to form hydroxyproline. The result is a very stable collagen structure. In addition to its role in collagen metabolism, vitamin C is critical to immune function, the manufacture of certain nerve transmitting substances and hormones, L-carnitine synthesis, and the absorption and utilization of other nutritional factors. Vitamin C is also a very important nutritional antioxidant. It is also important to immune function as well as the body's ability to absorb and utilize other nutritional factors including iron.*

MSM
MSM is a molecule found throughout nature in plants, animals and humans. It consists of two hydrocarbon units attached to one unit of sulfur and two oxygen atoms. Hence, it is one-third sulfur by weight. Sulfur is cital to the growth of hair, nails, organs and connective tissue, and is necessary for the production of insulin and the metabolism of carbohydrates.*

Why is Athletic Health Blend So Effective?
Potassium, sodium and chloride are electolytes. Electrolytes are mineral salts that conduct electricity when dissolved in water. It has been found that over 95% of the body's potassium is in the cells. Most of the body's sodium is found outside the cells in blood and other fluids. During exertion, the body is rapidly pumping sodium out of the cells while pumping potassium in. If sodium is not pumped out or replaced with potassium, water builds up in th ecells which will cause them to swell and potentially burst.
