This disease occurs primarily among middle aged men and occurs when uric acid builds up in the blood and crystals are deposited in a joint forming a bump or growth that irritates the joint, particularly the base of the big toe, causing it to become inflamed and painful. It can also occur in the heel, knee, hand, ear or any joint in the body.
Uric acid is a waste product from the breakdown of an amino acid called purine. Normally uric acid is dissolved in the blood and eliminated from the body by the kidneys. Water-soluble potassium is the key to resolving the problem and balancing the body.
WHAT SHOULD I AVOID? Stay away from foods the contain purine (the precursor to uric acid). Organ meats and yeast laden baked goods are high in purine. Avoid gravies, broths, sardines, mussels, herring, mushrooms, dried beans, fish, lentils, peas, oatmeal, spinach and stay away from beer.
A study in the Annals of Rheumatic Diseases found that 41% of a group of gout sufferers drank more than 7 twelve ounce cans of beer daily, compared to 17% from the healthy control group. Beer contains not only alcohol, which raises uric acid but also, fermented yeast - a double whammy. Some researchers say eliminating alcohol from the diet is all it takes to reverse and prevent gout in some individuals.
WHAT DO I DO?
Eat lots of fresh or canned cherries. Sounds weird? Maybe, but it works to get rid of gout. A report published in 1950 Texas Reports on Biology and Medicine, revealed that patients with severe gout put on a diet of one half pound of fresh or canned cherries per day saw their blood uric acid levels return to normal with no further attacks of gout. Cherry juice seems to help accomplish the same desired end as well.
The science behind the cherry? Cherries have an excellent calcium to phosphorous ratio and contain about 191 mg of potassium to every 100 grams of sodium. This balance keeps uric acid from crystallizing and becoming deposited in the joints. Along with the minerals cherries also are very high in malic acid, a fruit acid that neutralizes both uric and lactic acid in the body.
Blueberries, hawthorn berries and strawberries have also been credited with helping take care of gout. The famous Swedish botanist Linnaeus is said to have cured his gout by eating large amounts of strawberries every morning and evening. |
